Specific nutritional needs of preterm babies

The days are planned to be informal, interactive workshops where we can share and develop our knowledge and skills. This will be provided through a combination of presentations, discussions, case studies, videos, picture reviews and practical demonstrations. On each day there will be an opportunity to review research based evidence and to answer multiple choice questions which can provide practice opportunities for anyone considering taking the International Lactation Consultants examination.

Please note that the IBLCE does not endorse any particular study day of course.

Aim of the Day:

To acknowledge and develop knowledge and skills in meeting the nutritional needs of the premature baby through breastfeeding and provide optimum support for the breastfeeding dyad.

0900 - 0915:

Introduction to the day and each other.

0915 - 1030:
Meeting the nutritional needs of the premature baby, why this is important and different to the term neonate.
Why breastmilk is especially important for premature babies.

1030 - 1045:
Coffee and discussion.

1100 - 1230:
Supporting the development of premature baby through to breastfeeding.
- Maturation of the suckling reflex.
- Supporting the mother in mothering her baby
- Enabling the process in a neonatal care unit.
- Equipment and techniques that enable practice.

1230 - 1300:
Video - Kangaroo Baby Care

1300 - 1345:
Lunch

1345 - 1515:
Taking a feeding history, then relating this to case studies from practice.

1515 - 1530:
Tea

1530 - 1600:
Multiple choice questions based on the day, feedback and evaluations.

To acknowledge and develop further knowledge on breastmilk, milk banking and medications which could effect feeding outcomes. To support practice to enable women to make informed choices on issues around breastfeeding.

0900 - 0915:

Introduction to the day and feedback from yesterday.

0915 - 1030:
Constituents of breastmilk - how this informs practice.

1030 - 1045:
Coffee

1045 - 1300:
Breastmilk banking and storage of breastmilk.
- Looking at the international / national picture.
- What mothers need to know about donating to a milk bank.
- The process of collecting, sampling and storing breastmilk.
- The possible future for breastmilk banks.

1300 - 1345:
Lunch.

1345 - 1445:
Medications and breastfeeding.

1445 - 1500:
Tea

1500 - 1530 :
Looking at issues in practice and medication.

1530 - 1600 :
Multiple choice questions based on the day, feedback and evaluations.
