Anatomy and Physiology - revisited

The days are planned to be informal, interactive workshops where we can share and develop our knowledge and skills. This will be provided through a combination of presentations, discussions, case studies, videos, picture reviews and practical demonstrations. On each day there will be an opportunity to review research based evidence and to answer multiple choice questions which can provide practice opportunities for anyone considering taking the International Lactation Consultants examination.
Please note that the IBLCE does not endorse any particular study day of course.
Aim of the Day:
To acknowledge and build on knowledge and skills on breast anatomy and physiology, and through applying this understanding use it in practice.
0900 - 0915:
Introduction to the day and each other.
0915 - 1030:
Updating and reviewing breast anatomy and physiology.
1030 - 1045:
Coffee
1045 - 1300:
Relating our knowledge on breast anatomy and physiology into breastfeeding practice.
1300 - 1345:
Lunch.
1345 - 1530:
Techniques and equipment that can support sub-optimal breast feeding.
- Switch feeding / breast compression / supplemental systems / medications
1530 - 1600:
Multiple choice questions based on the day, feedback and evaluations.

To acknowledge and build on our understanding of the neonatal mouth and suckling and reflect how this can impact on breastfeeding.
0900 - 0915:
Introduction to the day and each other.
0915 - 1030:
Oral anatomy of the newborn and physiology of suckling and how changes impact on breastfeeding. How the birth can impact on breastfeeding.
1030 - 1045:
Coffee
1045 - 1300:
Feeding the baby with:
- Cleft lip and/or palate
- Different palates
- Tongue-tie
1300 - 1345:
Lunch.
1345 - 1515:
Supporting the feeding dyad where the baby is hypotonic or hypertonic.
1515 - 1530:
Tea
1530 - 1600:
Multiple choice questions based on the day, feedback and evaluations.
